Foreword my upcoming publication: Written Against Cultural Stagnation By: Anthony Pearson

Written against Cultural Stagnation is based on the idea that the world around us is growing and changing right before our eyes. It’s the idea that we have an obligation to our ourselves and our families to grow and change with the times. This is the idea that we are at a point in American history by “accident”. This is a time where we all must take responsibility for our actions, whether right or wrong. This is the idea that to be human is to err, while recognizing that all errors have lessons to provide. It’s the idea that a positive train of thought will be the driving force of a nation headed in a new direction. This is an idea written specifically at the same time universally. This is a short journey through the thought process of a young Black male from Irvington, NJ. The objective is to express my thoughts on a range of topics, which I feel are relevant to our everyday lives in society, through poetry and prose. Written Against Cultural Stagnation is my release. This is my first published collection and in many ways it has come at a perfect time for me personally. We have been thrust into a time where many aspects of society which were deemed as “taboo” have been at the forefront of this country’s conversation. Whether we like it or not, we are forced into forming a round table of thoughts and feelings regarding some of the most critical issues involving not only us but the US as a whole. I am a true believer in things happening for reasons. So with that being said, welcome to Written Against Cultural Stagnation. Proving evolution is constant.

Regina's Word of the Moment

Isaiah 61:1-21.

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to blind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.2. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn.

It's On Me

Struggling while reaping no progress
Is stagnation at its best
A fighter’s reward is not found in victory
When winning is not an end result
The victory comes within the fight
As character is strengthened and dedication is unwavered
Life
Constantly searching for the unseen
With the belief one day something will be revealed
The truth is hiding behind Plymouth rocks
That symbolically block mentalities from seeing the light
Constantly giving your all when all you seek is a shot
To change the past
By pressing forward through daily battles that have blazed paths
And laid foundations undeniable and unshaken
Dying to live a life of simplicity and certainty
While living imperfectly in an imperfect world
Where society lies through history
Making untrained eyes blurred

Vanity Strikes

Interfering with the right
Thoughts
Soiled in turmoil is a soul
Lost
Sacred origin
Vainglorious in the present
Denying your better being’s presence
That Trojan horse is portrayed to evade suspicion
While excessive addictions seep through the pores of the wicked
The stench is filthy
No charge needed for the guilty
As the wheel turns
It will be hellfire’s victory
In the end
The pleasure of sin turns to pain within
An unpleasant presence wearing rationale thin
With Devilish deeds
Denying the virtues of a higher breed
Hellish seeds are planted
And horns grow from the tree
Pride has been rooted deep
Tarnishing the soul indeed

Celestial Manifestation

Celestial Manifestation

Trying times
Designed to blind
Innocent minds
And keep 3rd eyes
Closed

The breeding of fear
Aligned to steer
Away from what’s clear
Maneuvering near
Hopelessness

Struggling lives
Progressing in strides
Within divides
Maintaining with minds
Open

Restructured motives
Driven by forward motions
Towards positive notions
With a 3rd eye focus
Clear

Insomnia's Influence Part .05

I flip this page
gaze in a
blurry vision
focused
on target
I've got to hit it
by any means
Malcolm couldn’t have said clearer
Pac’s gone
none left to call leaders.
Why even point at a person
seek self
that's wealth that keeps earning
the world's turning
we’re burning
still we keep on learning
how to maneuver
No order
fake soldiers
end up useless
Think
for yourself
on your feet
or sink
so deep
with no concrete
to land on
I stand on
my two feet
getting my man on
I stand strong
5’7 and all
heart
no bark
a hawk
stark on pages
Dirty New Jerzy
you heard Newark shattered its crime-rate
blind hate
fury
rules over City Hall
Corey’s all nervous
still built that Arena
while the grieving heard
sound like an arena
Brothers dying
Mother’s crying
Sisters trying
to hold on
keep heads up
weathering storms.

Revolutionary Fervor

A new day has arrived. We have just witnessed a non-violent revolution. This revolution was indeed televised. In masses, the people came out and decided they were ready to become part of the solution to the many problems America has and faces. Racism was not bold enough! Skeptism was not strong enough! Those negative forces that drive wedges through progress were not the righteous forces on display Nov. 4th, 2008. An overwhelming statement was made on this day. The people do want change. The people do want leadership. But most of all, the people want to feel as if they are being taken into consideration. The choice was as clear as it gets. Change has come to America.

A new way of thinking has emerged. We now have to believe that our attitude has an impact on the way we see the world. The notion of responsibility and accountability has been pushed to the side for the notions of materialism and selfishness. We are at a moment where we have to pick a side. We have become accustomed to playing both sides of the fence, which is a knock against convenience, but in this case it is virtually impossible. We have an opportunity to shape our minds along with our families in order to heighten our awareness and realize that with a sense of purpose comes great reward. The responsibility is ours to control what we can and make the world around us a better place to exist. We must also hold ourselves, and those around us, accountable for their actions and reactions in order to create a movement of productivity. We have been granted the choice we desired and now it is up to us to ensure that we, as a people, remain grounded while assisting our new President-Elect Barack Obama in leading this country towards further greatness. Now is the time that we must show and prove that we ALL deserve this moment in history and we must do this together and not rely on President Obama to handle what we have the power to handle ourselves. It’s been a long time coming, but change has come. We must recognize our deepest fear…and conquer it.

Generation: Movement

Change has truly come
The people have decided
To choose their leader

One who has led us
To look within ourselves first
To seek a purpose

We have grown through this
Momentous history ride
And waged a landslide

Involved we’ve become
In a process we once shunned
Our voices have won

We’ve defeated odds
Indeed we’ve shattered the glass
And broke barriers

But now is the time
For persistence to be bred
Once all the tears shed

Continue to tread
Through troubled waters ahead
We have just begun

For the change we seek
isn't merely victory
Now begins movement

The Fire Within

Within me is a fire being stoked
by the presence of lost hope
among the environment as a whole
In the dark are the children of a brighter generation
Misguided
so products of the environment are what we are raising
You see, it’s not about the black fist raising
or the lessons the elders gave us
It’s about awareness gaining
the recognition of the blessings in our favor

The flame within me is karma
manifested in my persona
resurrecting the idea of honor
An open path to Heavenly math
where One nation is the product
of God times Man
It burns to learn the depth of my path
when silence was once golden
it is devaluing fast
Though our past holds pain
we’ve been seeing some glory
but through tunnel vision
we can not see the whole story

The fire in me is scorching
My paper becomes ashes forming
blowing into the wind
while the ink from my pen bleeds thin
My degrees allow my hands to craft nothing
now the freedom in my mind
must scribe something

Dear Mr. President

Don’t think it’s because you’re Black that I support you
Even though that fact is a factor, I have to warn you
After this election, accountable you become
to not only US, but to this whole nation you run
Remember Watergate? The history of those tapes?
Make no mistake, they don’t want you to be great, so they might make
Rogue moves, you’re in a chess game with fools
you be the king, matter of fact, just be you
Picture Bobby and Malcolm, John and Martin
paving your path to surpassing odds and margins
Really, do people really know that content of character
plays the greatest deciding factor when people back you
Even though you had a fiery pastor
composure you held, certainly you quelled the madness
Speaking on Race in in America in front of America
the one act nobody attempted since Martin was telling us
In dreams reality breathes a cool breeze
under fire you were never ignited, forcing your critics to breathe
Deeply, in anticipation of defeat, in my mind I see the ironing of white sheets
Even with the progress we’ve made, you’re still a shade too dark
but look who the jokes on, the Thomas Jefferson’s at heart
Now the crossroad is here, the choice is clear
we haven’t had a President in 8 years
The only thing we had was warfare, failing schools, and a frail economy, among others,
please follow through on your policies brother.

May The Winds Reach Us In Time

May the Winds Reach Us In Time!
Inspired by: Ezekial 37

As we multiply and our numbers become greater
in a covenant with ourselves is where we must place our favor
We must place our neighbor on our level
and recognize our power lies in a united endeavor
We shake to the ground of speakers and leaders
though we find no force to move us when it reaches us
[Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: We are cut off from our parts. 37:11]
We have managed to disconnect ourselves from each other
while the calm before the storm has us at ease in mass numbers
We breathe no air, burying ourselves in despair, death, destruction, and desolation
We must empower ourselves with peace making
as we multiply and generations rise
with the wind behind our backs and our feet solid in the soil of pride.
May the winds reach us in time!

The Good, The Bad, The Jersey

Two more shot in Newark, a group decries city violence
Two men were shot yesterday afternoon in an apartment building in Newark's West Ward, not far from where activists were protesting a fatal Nov. 5 shooting.

Is marching against racism really the answer?
March is planned in support of Obama...

Brick City Blues by: A. Pearson

In a city where negativity brews
the energies of frustration and desperation fuse
creating a loss for words, so much for the good news
ironically, I’ve seen Blood members singing the blues
In a city where time changes by the hour
one minute it’s calm, the next second tears shower
creating puddles of pain, the pavement receives flowers
while candles illuminate a situation that towers
Over a city where at anytime attitudes can ooze
into the cracks of rationality, when that happens we all lose
It’s created a monster, the cauldron pot stews
a mixture wicked in its intention, which path will we choose
In a city which is ours, holding historical power
though over the decades we became sour
where tasteless acts of rage devours
mind frames of young brains, change is about us.
